King Student Goes to Ottawa For Historica Fair
An Abbotsford student's research in to one of the darkest times in Canadian history has earned her a trip to Ottawa in July. King Traditional Elementary's Sukhman Sidhu did her Historica Fair project on the on the infamous Komagata Maru incident, which saw 376 passengers from Punjab, India being denied access in to Canada in 1914.

The depth of the project earned Sidhu the distinction of being the Fraser Valley's representative at the National Historica Fair in July. It is the second consecutive year the Fraser Valley representative is from King Traditional. "Last year, the one student picked was from King Traditional, Vanessa Gill. She loved the experience in Ottawa," said Angela Wiebe, principal at King Traditional, adding the two winning students had the same verve and passion for their projects. "They were able to speak to the project. They had the confidence, the poise and the knowledge. If you asked a question, they were able to answer it and relate it back to themselves."

Sidhu said she picked the Komagata Maru because she wanted to know why "people sacrificed their lives to come to Canada."
